The Gift + A Proposal

The Gift + A Proposal

9” x 12” watercolor on paper (2026)

The Gift + A Proposal

We three in the twilight

strolled to the overlook,

Stepping through shadow,

below Ursa, big & small.

.

His hand is in his pocket,

a brown speckled pebble in his palm,

from the blooming summer garden

behind their cozy blue house.

She sways in the winds sighing,

my eye fixed on the grasses swaying

in the valley. A hymn on her lips

of longing, undone by circumstance.

Wolves sing before the moonrise,

from a mountaintop, or uncanny wood

as deer breath gathers first

over the fraught and foamy creek,

it hovers then drifts, their companion

overnight til dawn. Fragrances

releasing, like rose pedals

from the wilted flower.

Our familiar tapered whispers

mingle with the birdsong,

a twig snapping, crickets chirp,

dewdrops...

Look! They cry out: a compact is signed

in air, not ink. Tomorrow is Today —

I am witness. The gift accepted,

a promise made.

[Only the young should try this way,

daring to surprise Fate and Destiny

with a dance, by Chance or Choice —

Art in Death’s defiance, born again.]
